Liposuction is the surgical removal of fatty tissue from specific areas of the body by inserting a metal cannula (hollow metal tube) under the skin. Some of the common techniques used today include the tumescent technique and the power assisted liposuction. Our surgeons perform both of these techniques and can discuss the pros and cons of each of them with you.
It should be noted that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. The ideal patients are those who are fit but have excess fatty tissue accumulations in certain parts of the body. It is still no substitute for diet and exercise. Under standard conditions the maximum volume of liposuction advisable to be removed in one operation is between 2-4 liters. This represents approximately 5-10 lbs of weight on the body. Five to ten pounds can be easily lost with diet and exercise in most cases. The real benefit therefore of liposuction is reshaping specific areas of the body.

PERFORMING LIPOSUCTION
Liposuction is performed in our outpatient surgery center. Most liposuction in other centers is done under general anesthesia. We do not use general anesthesia avoiding the main risks of this procedure. Tumescent liposuction is now recognized world wide as the technique permitting the greatest safety, the most rapid recovery, the least pain, and the best aesthetic results.
It is also the only technique that, in the hands of an expert surgeon, permits liposuction totally by local anesthesia, avoiding the dangers of general anesthesia. If you think you need some relaxation we can provide safe sedation that will be expertly monitored by our very experienced medical staff.
There is a limit to how much fatty tissue can be removed. There is a potential blood and fluid loss risk if very large volumes of fatty tissue are removed in one operation. The limitations regarding the total amount of fat that is removable to avoid any risks might require that we limit the procedure to one or two areas and schedule other areas at a later date.
AFTER THE OPERATION
It is common to have some oozing of fluid through the liposuction openings after surgery. This usually stops after one to two days. Pain is mild one to four days after the procedure and can easily be controlled with analgesics.
THE RECOVERY PROCESS
After liposuction you will be asked to wear a compression garment for approximately three weeks except when you shower. You are allowed to shower the day after your operation. It is common for fluid to ooze from the tiny incisions for approximately 48 hours. It is usually possible to go back to work within approximately 3-5 days after surgery but you must avoid strenuous activity for three weeks. The bruising will also take approximately three weeks to disappear. Swelling may last 4-6 weeks or in some cases longer. Despite the swelling you should notice an immediate difference in the shape of the area that was treated. The final results can sometimes take as long as 4 to 6 months.
